Massachusetts Antique License Plate Rules
According to Massachusetts antique license plate rules, an antique vehicle is a car manufactured at least 25 years ago that is:
- Preserved and maintained in a substantially original condition.
- Not used for daily transportation.
- Used primarily for parades, exhibitions, and club activities.
To qualify for antique plates in Massachusetts, your vehicle must also pass a safety inspection by a licensed Massachusetts inspector.
Exemptions from Safety Inspections
House Bill 3603, if passed, would exempt antique vehicles that are 50 years old or older from the state's annual safety inspection program.
Title Requirements
Yes, Massachusetts requires a title to register a classic car. The state will issue a new title for your vehicle when you register it with antique plates.
