Antique and Classic Vehicle Registration in Pennsylvania

Overview

According to Pennsylvania's Vehicle Code (Title 75, Chapter 13), antique and classic vehicles have specific requirements for registration and use.

Eligible Vehicles

  • Antique vehicles: Vehicles that are at least 25 years old and meet certain criteria, including historical significance.
  • Classic vehicles: Vehicles that are at least 20 years old but less than 25 years old and have historical or collectible value.

Antique Vehicle Exemptions

Antique vehicles are exempt from certain requirements, such as:

  • Mandatory vehicle inspections
  • Emissions testing in most counties

Commercial Use and Transfer

Antique and classic vehicles cannot be used for commercial purposes or for general transportation. They can only be driven for limited purposes, such as:

  • Display at exhibitions or parades
  • Educational use
  • Limited personal use

Antique and classic registration plates are not transferable to other vehicles. If the vehicle is sold, the plates must be surrendered to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
