Atlanta Braves defeat Houston Astros 7-6

Contreras' homerun in the 5th inning gave the Braves the lead for good.

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- William Contreras hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 7-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday night.

Contreras' homer, his sixth of the season, came off Astros starter Framber Valdez and gave the Braves a 5-4 lead. Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson also homered for Atlanta, which has won three of its last four games.

The Astros rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Kyle Tucker. But the Braves regained the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Michael Harris II.

A.J. Minter pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his seventh save of the season. Will Smith (3-0) got the win in relief, while Valdez (4-2) took the loss.

The Braves improved to 22-20 on the season, while the Astros dropped to 23-19.

In other news around the league, the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4.
