Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr., was a Kenyan economist, and his mother, Ann Dunham, was an American anthropologist. Obama's parents divorced when he was two years old, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Lolo Soetoro.
Obama attended Columbia University in New York City and Harvard Law School. After graduating from Harvard, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and served until 2004.
