Marlins, Nationals heat up NL East race with recent play

Miami has won 7 of last 10; Nats sweep weekend series against NL East leaders New York Mets

The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals have heated up the National League East race with their recent play. The Marlins have won seven of their last 10 games to move within 3.5 games of the first-place New York Mets in the NL East standings. The Nationals have won five of their last six, including a three-game sweep of the Mets over the weekend. The Marlins are 19-14 since Don Mattingly took over as manager on April 29. They are 8-4 in series since May 21 including series wins over the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, and are now 28-28 overall. They have also won five of their last six road series. The Nationals are 15-12 since Dave Martinez took over as manager on May 19. They are 7-3 in series since May 21, including series wins over the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. Before the sweep of the Mets, Washington had lost 10 consecutive series. The Marlins and Nationals will face off in a three-game series at Marlins Park starting on Monday. The series could have a major impact on the NL East race. If the Marlins can win the series, they can close the gap on the Mets to 2.5 games. If the Nationals win, they can move into a tie for second place in the division. The NL East race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in baseball. The Marlins, Nationals, and Mets are all within 3.5 games of each other with just over two months remaining in the regular season.
