Sir Thomas More: A Man of Principle
Life and Career
Sir Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478, in London, England. He received an excellent education, studying at Oxford University and becoming a successful lawyer. More also served as a member of Parliament and held various government positions, including Chancellor of England from 1529 to 1532.
A Man of Principle
More was a devout Catholic and a strong supporter of the Pope. When King Henry VIII broke with the Catholic Church and established himself as the head of the Church of England, More refused to accept this change. He believed that the King had no authority over religious matters and that the Pope was the rightful leader of the Church.
More's refusal to accept Henry's authority led to his downfall. He was charged with treason and beheaded on July 6, 1535.
Legacy
Sir Thomas More is remembered as a man of principle who stood up for his beliefs, even in the face of danger. He is a symbol of courage and integrity for many around the world.
Canonization
Thomas More was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1886. He is now considered a saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on June 22.
